PILATES AND MORE

Pilates

Joseph Pilates (1883–1967) invented the Pilates method of physical fitness.  As a child he suffered from asthma and other ailments which led him on a lifelong quest to improving his health and strength.  He studied yoga, gymnastics, dance, boxing and zen and believed that inefficient breathing and bad posture were large contributors to poor health.  From his studies, personal health and training, he devised a repertoire of exercises that strengthen the human body and mind.

Stott Pilates is an internationally recognized approach to the Pilates method pioneered by Joseph Pilates almost 100 years ago, incorporating modern knowledge about the body and movement.  Stott Pilates was implemented over two decades ago, refined by physical therapists, fitness and sports medicine professionals.  Practicing this contemporary approach not only results in long, lean muscles, slimming and body transformation, but aids in improving posture and the health of your spine.

Pilates can benefit everyone: athletes, adults getting into shape, injured individuals, pre- and post-natal women, children and more.  With over 500 low-impact exercises (on the reformer using progressive resistance, mat work with props and weighted balls, and more), Pilates can be adapted for all levels of fitness and results in many positive benefits:

  • Increases strength, flexibility, and grace
  • Reshapes and tones muscles
  • Relieves stress and back pain
  • Restores the natural curves of the spine
  • Enhances energy
  • Develops breathing capacity and increases circulation
  • Heightens mind-body awareness
  • Improves posture
  • Contributes to coping and concentration skills
  • Promotes better athletic performance and coordination
  • Aids injury rehabilitation and lowers the risk of injury

EQUIPMENT

Reformer

The reformer’s basic components include a carriage, headrest, foot bar and a sliding platform with attached springs that glides back and forth on rollers.  Springs are used to create resistance and allow the body to perform hundreds of exercises while lying down, sitting and standing.  Straps (used for both hands and feet) facilitate correct positioning, and an adjustable headrest helps to ensure stability and proper breathing patterns.  The reformer’s increased variety and more challenging workout can produce positive results and further develop the body’s core strength through focus on mindful movements of the body and breath.  It can also improve flexibility while encouraging the smooth flow of movement that is necessary to maintain correct form and alignment of the body.  The reformer supports your body developing slender muscles rather than bulk, while simultaneously allowing you to perform full range-of-motion exercises.

TRX Suspension Trainer

The TRX Suspension Trainer leverages gravity and your bodyweight to perform hundreds of exercises.  The client controls the amount of challenge on each exercise by adjusting body position to add or decrease resistance.  It delivers a fast, effective total-body work-out, increases muscular endurance and can benefit people of all fitness levels (from athletes to seniors).  The TRX workout is combined with the principles of Pilates to give a full body workout, building core, arm and leg strength.  The special emphasis placed on mindful movement and principles helps to ensure that muscular balance and results are achieved in a safe and effective way.
